How to dim or turn off the Mac mini LED

LuxMini adds a brightness slider and an off switch for the front status light to your macOS menu bar. It also offers schedules and effects. Here is what to expect before you install it.

Set it up

  1. Download the signed and notarized LuxMini DMG and move the app to Applications.
  2. Open LuxMini and approve the administrator prompt if macOS asks to install the LED helper.
  3. Use the menu-bar switch to turn the light off, or move the brightness slider to a level you prefer.

Want it dimmer at night?

In LuxMini Settings, Auto-dim can lower the LED at a chosen time or turn it off at sunset. You can still change the light manually when you need to. The full setup is in the Auto-dim documentation.

Check your Mac model

LuxMini supports Mac mini and Mac Studio models, but compatibility is not identical across every generation. Mac mini M4 support has been validated on physical hardware. Brand-new models use a reversible first-launch fade before their candidate profile is enabled. Check the current compatibility list before installing.

If the light does not change, do not assume the command worked just because the app opened. Run the LED access check in Settings. It verifies the helper, its permissions, and the hardware write. If it still fails, send your exact Mac model and macOS version through the feedback form.

What about the LED during sleep?

A fixed LED level and an animated effect are different things. LuxMini's Blink and Pulse effects are produced while macOS is running. They do not continue animating during true system sleep. We are investigating whether supported hardware can run a sleep animation on its own, but this is not a shipping feature.
